Be a safer horse rider...Check this 10 point safety list. |
| Wear protective headgear to the following standards - PAS 015 the BSEN 1384 or the ASTM F 1163 with a kitemark or SEI. For the hat to be effective it must fit correctly and the harness securely fastened at all times. |
| Always wear properly fitting footwear with a heel and instep. Shoes and trainers can slip through the stirrup, which might lead to a rider being dragged behind the horse if an accident occurred. |
| Use the correct sized stirrup irons for the footwear you are wearing. The stirrup iron should be approximately 1" larger than the footwear. Too small or too large may lead to a "dragging" accident. |
| A BETA standard body protector is recommended for added protection against falls. For further information on body protectors, please telephone the Safety Office. |
| Gloves should be worn when riding or leading. They should be light in colour and non-slip. |
| Your pony's/horse's tack should always fit correctly and be comfortable for the rider and equine. Always check the girth before and after you mount, and again, ten minutes into your ride. |
| Make yourself clearly visible. Use fluorescent equipment during the day and reflective equipment after lighting-up time. AVOID riding during the hours of darkness. |
| Always show courtesy to other road users and read the Highway Code. |
| Leave details of your intended route and estimated time of return with a responsible person. |
